Witton Shields - Originally, 'shielings' with the later addition of the place-name Witton.
A Grade II Listed Building.
Witton Shields refers to a historic strong house (a fortified dwelling), also known as Witton Shields Tower, stands in pastureland, overlooking the dene of Cowclose Burn on the north side, and the valley of the River Font to the south.
Built around 1608 by Nigel Thornton (A stone inscribed with the date 1608 and the initials NT is set above the door.) as a defensive structure (a bastle) with thick walls, a central stair turret.
Extensions were added to the building in 1680 and the building was reduced in height by a storey c1914.
One of the upper rooms of the house was used as a Roman Catholic chapel.
This now stands as farm and hamlet.
