Remembering Mattew Arkle. We aim to honour his memory and provide a glimpse into his life.
Matthew Arkle was born on 5 Oct 1903 Healey, Netherwitton
Son of Ephraim Arkle of Healey Farm and Eleanor Handyside of West Farm, Hartburn.
His mother died in 1906, leaving his father to raise a young family.
In 1911 Matthew aged 7 at living at Gallowshaws, His widowed grandmother's home.
By 1939 Matthew has remained at Gallowshaws, a Stockman & Horseman Assisting Uncles. He was also a ARP Warden.
Military:
Matthew became part of the Netherwitton Patrol (secret Stay-behind).
D-Day defending the IOW and also Defence of the Royal Family at Balmoral.
Matthews elder brother Henry was also part of the patrol.
There is no record of Matthew of ever marrying.
Death:
Mattew passed away on 2 March 1960 at The Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle Upon Tyne.
