Claverings Cross

Claverings Cross is a historical landmark in the area.

In a field behind Stanton house. Possibly dating back to the really 1500s!

It is a plain sandstone pillar 4ft 2inch high and 3ft 6inch round.

This pillar had cut upon it the figure of a sword approx 3ft high.

Some Many years ago the stone was removed to a place across the road by Mr Spraggon a farmer, as it's said it interfered with his ploughing. And used by cattle as a rubbing post!

It is then noted the plinth was placed back in its original location on a new base by Mrs Baker-Baker or Elmore Hall Co Durham who's land it stood on,

The cross head is reputed to be buried in the dike on the west side of the field.
