Corporal Henry Ross

Henry Ross born 1877 at Todstead Cottage Brinkburn, Rothbury, Northumberland.

The Son of George Ross and Mary Ann Lilburn.

In 1891 the Ross family are listed as living at Stanton Head Farm, Henry is working on the farm.

Husband of Annie Hodgson, of 9 Marlow Street, Blyth, Northumberland.

He left behind a Widow and 2 young children, Elizabeth 1913 and Henry born in September 1915, just before leaving for France. Henry had enlisted at Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Henry was a member of the local 18th Battalion known as the 1st Tyneside Pioneers, raised by the Lord Mayor and City of Northumberland during October 1914.

They converted to a Pioneer Battalion on 8th Feb 1915, and after further training they finally set off for war.

Landing at Le Havre on 8th January 1916, they fought on the infamous Battle of Somme during 1916.

On the 1st July 1916 they were involved in the “First Day” of the Battle of the Somme offensive fighting near to La Boiselle.

Henry was Killed in Action on 13th August 1916.

He was buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery at Souchez.
